Week One

First, A Little Bit of Pedagogical Philosophy: [WWW]Learn Chinese Beijing At GCE we have pioneered the use of an immersive Chinese language [WWW]Learn Chinese in beijing curriculum that, unlike many competing programs, actually tries to do the oft-abused phrase "language immersion" justice. We believe that learning does not stop when class ends, and we strongly encourage our students to take every opportunity to complement their classroom experience with extra-curricular [WWW]Learn Chinese in china activities that not only reinforce language skills acquired during morning core language classes, but also supplement cultural knowledge gleaned from afternoon elective courses. Extensive experience and research in [WWW]study chinese in beijing the field has convinced us [WWW]study chinese in china that one cannot hope to master Chinese (or any language for that matter) unless one is provided with a thorough grounding in local culture and customs. Though Chinese language curricula (including our own, to an certain degree) often make a distinction between classes designed to provide instruction in "pure language" and "pure culture," neither part of such a dichotomy can exist without the other. To truly learn, and ultimately master, Chinese, students must be provided with instruction in "Chinese language/culture" rather than the more exclusive "Chinese language."
